A specialist for extremely low-radiation procedures in combination with minimally invasive interventions, Prof. Dr. med. Philipp Sommer will assume the position of Director of the Clinic for Electrophysiology/Rhythmology at the Herz- und Diabeteszentrum NRW, Bad Oeynhausen from 1 November 2018.
Starting on 1 November, Prof. Dr. med. Philipp Sommer (43) will run the latest University Clinic to open at the Herz- und Diabeteszentrum NRW (HDZ NRW), Bad Oeynhausen. This Clinic provides minimally invasive therapeutic procedures especially developed for patients with cardiac dysrhythmia, so-called electrophysiological interventions which use state-of-the-art cardiac catheter technology, including ICD and pacemaker diagnostics. Now, for the first time ever, there are two different University Clinics operating at the HDZ NRW within the specialist field of cardiology. First Prof. Dr. Volker Rudolph took over from Prof. Dr. Dieter Horstkotte to become Director of the Clinic for General and Interventional Cardiology/Angiology on 15 August, and now the Ruhr-University of Bochum has appointed a further top-ranking cardiologist to a newly established Chair of Electrophysiology/Rhythmology.
Prof. Philipp Sommer has been Leading Senior Physician in the electrophysiological laboratory of the rhythmology department at the Herzzentrum Leipzig since 2013. He brings with him to Bad Oeynhausen a medical-technical innovation which facilitates extremely low-radiation procedures in the cardiac catheter laboratory.
"We are very pleased to have completed the appointment procedure so successfully. This excellent nomination for the Chair of Electrophysiology at the Ruhr-University of Bochum gives us the best reason in the world to look ahead with confidence", stressed CEO Dr. Karin Overlack, who conducted the negotiations with the first-choice candidate on behalf of the University. "With Prof. Dr. Philipp Sommer we have managed to attract another top-ranking scientist to the HDZ who will lastingly enhance the brilliance of our specialist Clinic for cardiac medicine while continuing to pursue the interdisciplinary further development of our Center with vision."
Philipp Sommer studied Human Medicine at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg in Breisgau and at the Pierre et Marie Curie University of Paris. Born in Ravensburg, he completed his doctorate with the highest accolade ("summa cum laude"), a scientific investigation into myocardial perfusion following heart transplantation. In 2004, he then moved to the rhythmology department at the Herzzentrum Leipzig as an Assistant Physician, before qualifying in 2009 as a specialist for internal medicine and cardiology. In 2010, still in the rhythmology department, he became a Senior Physician and took over management of the electrophysiological laboratory three years later. In 2013, he completed a postdoctorate on "The significance of imaging techniques in invasive electrophysiology". Just a few weeks ago, the University of Leipzig nominated Sommer as an Extracurricular Professor
Research and awards
Sommer won the 2001 prize for young medics awarded by the German Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He is a trained "Medical Team and Project Manager" and certified by the German Cardiac Society (DGK) for "invasive electrophysiology and active pacemaker implants". In 2015, he became a Guest Professor at the Chinese University of Dalian. Prof. Sommer is a member of various national and international medical societies and a reviewer for numerous scientific journals. He is scientifically active in the Workgroup Rhythmology (AG 1) of the DGK (since 2015) and will become its spokesperson in October 2019.
From Leipzig to Bad Oeynhausen
Senior Physicians Dr. Arash Arya and Dr. Klaus-Jürgen Gutleben have been provisionally managing The Clinic for Electrophysiology/Rhythmology at the Herz- und Diabeteszentrum NRW since 15 August, and will continue to do so until Professor Sommer arrives on 1 November. Sommer is 43 years old and married with two children.
