Award: 5 stars for Diabetes Center

With immediate effect, a new award can be seen hanging in pride of place at the entrance to the Diabetes Center in the Herz- und Diabeteszentrum NRW (HDZ NRW), Bad Oeynhausen. This 5-star award, given to the Diabetes Center (Director: Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Diethelm Tschöpe) by the German Association of Clinical Diabetes Centers (BVKD), is testimony to the excellent medical and nursing care which patients with metabolic diseases receive at the University hospital in Bad Oeynhausen. For the first time ever, the BVKD has published a ranking list for all its 120 affiliated members, and the Diabetes Center in Bad Oeynhausen was one of just twelve institutes across the whole of Germany to receive 5 stars, the highest possible evaluation.

According to the BVKD, the aim of the list is an objective presentation of the performance of its 120 members, providing patients and transferring physicians with an overview and simplifying the search for a suitable hospital. When compiling its list of clinics, the BVKD took into account their existing certifications, and the Diabetes Center was able to profit from its overall QMKD (Quality Management Clinical Diabetes Centers) certification, as well as the certification of its Wound Healing Center by the German Diabetes Society (DDG). The evaluation process also included the number of diabetes patients treated and the variety of specialist training programs offered.

"The five stars are the result of years of consistently hard work from our entire team in accordance with top quality standards", Clinic Director Prof. Tschöpe said contentedly. "We got top marks in all areas. This is a great motivation for the future - to maintain our optimal care of patients, while continuing to work on further improvements."

Around 2,000 patients with all types of diabetes mellitus and related complications are treated in the Diabetes Center under the watchful eye of Prof. Tschöpe every year. In addition to its focus on cardiovascular risk assessment, treatment of cardiac and vascular diseases, as well as endocrinology and gastroenterology, the Diabetes Center also specializes in the treatment of nerve damage and circulatory disorders, including diabetic foot syndrome.
