Official confirmation of its outstanding medical and nursing care for patients with metabolic diseases was received by the Diabetes Center, part of the Herz- und Diabeteszentrum NRW (HDZ NRW) in Bad Oeynhausen, at the end of April. Holding the certificate in their hands means more to Diabetes Center Director Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Diethelm Tschöpe and HDZ NRW CEO Dr. Karin Overlack than just written proof of a successfully completed certification procedure: "We see this repeated recognition as confirmation that individual treatment adapted to the clinical picture in question, plus well-defined routines and control mechanisms, represent clear quality criteria for hospitals. This quality is achieved by all employees as a team, over the course of continual improvement measures."
At the Diabetes Center, led by Prof. Tschöpe, around 2,000 people with all types of diabetes mellitus and secondary diseases are treated every year. In addition to its focus on cardiovascular risk assessment, the treatment of cardiac and vascular diseases, endocrinology and gastroenterology, the Diabetes Center is also specialized in the treatment of nerve damage and perfusional disorders, including care for patients with diabetic foot syndrome.
Participation of the Diabetes Center in the Quality Management of Clinical Diabetes Centers (QMKD) has a long tradition. Since 2005, the Center has submitted itself to comprehensive tests in the following categories: patient and staff orientation, process quality and control, hospital safety, communication, and quality management. These tests take place regularly every 3 years and have as their orientation the self-evaluation report compiled by the Diabetes Center in conjunction with the KTQ (Cooperation for Transparency and Quality in Hospitals) certification procedure for the entire HDZ NRW. The test process is carefully prepared and monitored by Annette Beneker, Head of Nursing Services at the Diabetes Center, Senior Physician Dr. Michael Hauber, and Oliver Eickhoff, Head of Quality Management at the HDZ NRW.
First the Center must prove that it employs sufficiently qualified staff. These include diabetology specialists, diabetes consultants, a psychologist, wounds managers and podiatrists, meeting the requirements of the German Diabetes Society (DDG). Regular further training measures are compulsory for all employees.
