Continual expansion of the Institute for Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, managed by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Burchert, has given patients both at the HDZ NRW and at surrounding hospitals access to large-scale, state-of-the-art medical equipment:
In addition to a gamma camera, the Institute has a positron emission tomograph (PET) with two cyclotrons. The radiopharmaceuticals produced at the HDZ NRW are also sold. At the HDZ NRW, PET is predominantly used in cardiac diagnostics, permitting non-invasive metabolic analysis of the heart cells and thus, for example, early cardiac arrest screening.
The Institute also has years of experience in oncological applications. Since 1996, PET has been used at the HDZ NRW for tumor diagnosis, also benefiting external patients.
