An 18-strong delegation from the University of Saitama in Japan visited the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW. Prof. Kazutomo Minami MD PhD, Vice Director of the Clinic for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, welcomed his Japanese colleagues Prof. Ryozo Omoto MD, Medical Director of Saitama Medical School, and CEO Dr. Kijojuki Maruki, as well as five Japanese architects.

The Japanese visitors were keen to learn all about the infrastructure, architecture and management of the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW prior to planning a new hospital building in Saitama. Engineer Klaus Budde, from the construction planning company B+K Bauplanung GmbH, told the guests all about the technology and construction of the Heart Center building. They also received information about modern hospital management from Dr. Otto Foit, CEO of the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW.

Long-standing cooperation with Saitama Medical School

The Clinic for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Saitama University Hospital have been in close contact for many years. Since 1995 Prof. Minami has supervised an exchange program between Japanese and German medical staff.

Around 40 Japanese physicians, nurses and cardiotechnicians have been trained at the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW to date. Five of those physicians have since become consultants or senior consultants in Japan. Two medical students from the Ruhr University of Bochum are currently attending Saitama Medical School.

Prof. Minami, Guest Professor at the University of Saitama, guarantees the rapid spread of medical know-how and innovations to Japan by giving long-distance lectures and transmitting live heart operations. Prof. Minami has performed numerous heart transplantations on Japanese patients, both in Bad Oeynhausen and in Japan, always ensuring the presence of competent medical aftercare for his patients. His regular personal visits and encounters in Japan have also contributed to making him a welcome guest there.

Earlier this year, the Bad Oeynhausen cardiosurgeon traveled all over Japan with Olympic walking medalist Hartwig Gauder to promote organ donation. “Organ donation has no lobby in Japan. The willingness of the people to donate organs is still very low. In the course of many talks, lectures and media appearances we were able to provide information about the necessity of heart transplantations and to reduce some common fears”, Prof. Minami told us.

Thanks to his untiring commitment to promoting heart transplantation medicine, Saitama Medical School became officially recognized as Japan’s fourth transplantation center in September 2002. The Saitama cardiosurgeons can now look after their patients in Japan and need to seek advice from their Bad Oeynhausen colleagues only in complex cases.
