With its widely recognized range of treatments, including all cardiosurgical procedures from minimally invasive interventions to heart and lung transplants to ventricular assist devices and artificial hearts, the Clinic for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery is one of the largest centers of its kind worldwide, with a very high level of surgical experience.

Cardiosurgery

At the Clinic for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, both conventional interventions and complex surgery are performed. Our motto is always: depending on the individual clinical picture, the age of the patient and/or any secondary diseases, a careful decision is always made regarding the gentlest procedure for the patient and the one which promises the best possible quality of life in the long term.

Minimally invasive cardiosurgical interventions have become increasingly significant in the last few years, e.g. in bypass or valve surgery. For certain patient groups, use of the heart-lung machine can mean a higher risk. At the HDZ NRW, the quality of minimally invasive treatments is verifiably high.

Special operations for patients with myocardial insufficiency

At our Clinic, patients with myocardial insufficiency are in the best of hands. We offer all manner of special operations, including artificial heart implantation and heart transplantation. We have performed more than 2,200 transplantations since 1989, making the Herz- und Diabeteszentrum NRW one of the largest cardiac transplantation centers worldwide. The shortage of donor organs and the long wait until transplantation have led to the creation of an artificial heart program which, with its variety of applied systems and successful individual realisation, has been able to increase quality of life in affected patients.
