New stem cell production technique by University Blood Transfusion Service OWL receives science prize So-called adult stem cells have been at the center of public discussion for some time now. Hopes are running high that these "multi-talents" might mean therapies for numerous different diseases. A closed production technique, in which stem cells can be gained from patients for use in those patients, has been developed successfully for the first time worldwide by the University Blood Transfusion Service OWL within the Institute for Laboratory and Transfusion Medicine at the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW, University Hospital of the Ruhr-University of Bochum, Director: Prof. Knut Kleesiek, MD. Heart and Diabetes Center NRW present telemedicine and artificial heart research at Germany Year in Japan North Rhine-Westphalia will have its own representation at the Germany Year in Japan (GinJPN). In so doing, NRW would like to pay tribute to the importance of its economic and scientific connections to Japan, which have always been excellent. Within this framework, the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW will provide information about the potential of telemedicine, the field of artificial heart research and about state-of-the-art hospital management. After experiencing work here: Indonesian nurses and physicians fly home to Jakarta Three nurses and two physicians from Indonesia now have six months of new professional and cultural experience under their belts. In April they left their home town of Jakarta and began working at the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW in Bad Oeynhausen. Now it is time for them to return to their hospital back home. [more details] |

Academy for Cardiotechnicians Hermann-Josef Knobl is a professional lifesaver. Even if he prefers not to hear it. He and his colleagues are called upon several times a day. Nearly 70 000 times in total so far. Knobl is a perfusionist and cryotechnician. He operates, maintains and develops heart-lung machines – those high-tech boxes used to pump blood in patients undergoing heart surgery. [more details] |

The CardioWest artificial heart: HDC medical technicians take on maintenance for the whole of Europe The medical technical department of the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW has taken on the service work for the CardioWest artificial heart drive mechanism throughout Europe. From now on the medical technicians will be responsible for all maintenance and repairs to the artificial heart system made by the American firm Syncardia. [more details] |

Past and future mechanical circulatory support The Heart and Diabetes Center NRW hosted this year's conference of the Working Group of the German Society for Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery in Bad Oeynhausen. The annual conference was aimed at exchanging experiences, innovations and problems with heart-lung machines and ventricular assist devices (VADs), as well as at finding new solutions. New "CorAide" mini artificial heart system successfully implanted Implantation of "CorAide", a new miniaturized cardiac support system, at the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW. The benefit: this new artificial heart adjusts its pumping action to the physical exertion of the patient. [more details] |
